The Phillies have signed joining the pba tour pitchers Aaron Cook and Juan Cruz to minor league joining the pba tour deals, the team announced on Twitter on Wednesday. All three have been invited to major league camp, the team said in a press release.
Cook, 33, spent the first 10 years of his career with the Rockies, who drafted him in 1997. He started 18 games for the Red Sox last year. Only twice has Cook had a season ERA under 4.00 (last time was 2008). The last three years his ERA was 5.08, 6.03, 5.25 respectively.
Technically, Cook will be going to spring training with the hopes of getting a spot in the rotation, joining the pba tour but it's hard for me to believe that would actually happen. His best days are behind him. He may provide joining the pba tour some depth at the Triple-A level.
The Phillies will be looking at Cruz, 34, to contend for a spot in the back end of the bullpen. With the Pirates last year, Cruz made 43 appearances in the seventh joining the pba tour inning joining the pba tour and later. From the seventh to the ninth innings of games in 2012, the right-hander posted a 2.81 ERA in 32.0 innings pitched. He walked 18 and struck out 31 during that stretch.
Mandy Housenick has been a sports writer since January 2001, landing at The Morning Call in 2004. The Syracuse grad from the outskirts of Wilkes-Barre is in her fifth year as the full-time Phillies joining the pba tour beat writer. Her love for baseball dates back to the age of 5 when she attended her first Phillies game, one in which Mike Schmidt hit a game-winning home run. She's been a baseball junkie ever since.
