With overwhelming public support, the Port of San Diego remains committed to expanding the San Diego Convention Center and Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel despite a negative recommendation issued Friday by California Coastal Commission staff.
The project team is continuing its ongoing discussions and negotiations with Coastal Commission staff to address their concerns about the project. The Port will present san diego dinner cruise the plan, explaining the numerous ways in which it will benefit the public, san diego dinner cruise to the 11 voting members of the California Coastal Commission on October 10, 2013.
"This project is highly deserving of California Coastal san diego dinner cruise Commission approval," said Board of Port Commissioners Chair Ann Moore. "The Convention Center Expansion will enhance access to the waterfront and add a signature 5-acre rooftop park for visitors to enjoy, while creating thousands of jobs and boosting the regional economy."
The California Coastal Commission will consider a Port Master Plan Amendment to allow construction of the project at their October 10, 2013, meeting, which will be held at Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Diego. With their report, staff had the option of recommending either approval or denial for the project.
The project includes a 740,000-square-foot addition to the Convention Center, including a five-acre rooftop park, improved views, access to the waterfront, enhancements to the waterside promenade, re-routing of trucks for a better pedestrian experience, landscaping and other improvements at ground level, and a 500-room expansion of the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.
Convention Center clients have indicated their need for a contiguous expansion. More than 40 percent of lost business is due to lack of available contiguous space. An expansion of the facility san diego dinner cruise will allow retention and growth of the current client base, and ensure that groups of various sizes can be accommodated simultaneously. The potential annual regional economic impact is an additional $698 million and an additional $12.7 million in hotel tax revenue.
The five-acre rooftop park is a proposed regional asset that would attract both visitors and residents. Inspired by other successful elevated parks, such as Highline Park in Manhattan, which attracts 3.7 million visitors each year, the park would be accessible and able to accommodate small groups of friends enjoying panoramic views of downtown San Diego and the waterfront, or more than 4,500 people enjoying performances sitting san diego dinner cruise on the park's "great lawn."
The need for Convention san diego dinner cruise Center Expansion has been fully vetted san diego dinner cruise by a citizens' san diego dinner cruise task force made up of hospitality, business, taxpayers, environmental, and labor representatives, with input from the public at dozens of open meetings. Over the last several weeks, the region has rallied behind the project, with hundreds of letters of support san diego dinner cruise from elected san diego dinner cruise officials, municipalities, community groups, and area residents.
