The popular TV show, The Walking Dead, has made several drastic departures from the comic book it is based on.  Changes are to be expected.  There are things you can do in a comic book that would never make it past TV  censors.  And the pace is very different.  The comic book can blow through an entire TV show worth of story in a few panels.  But these differences have completely changed the context of events on the show such that sometimes events no longer make sense.
Now that the show is taking a break until next February, I thought alaska vacation tour packages it would be fun to go back and re-read alaska vacation tour packages the issues of the comic book that the third season of the show is based on and look at how the show differs from the source material.  Warning: the following article contains spoilers for both the show and the comic.
I won t spoil later issues of the comic for those who aren t caught up.  And I will try to avoid spoilers that may be incorporated into future episodes of the show.  Although the way the show jumbles up the events of the comic, it is sometimes hard to guess when they might go back and pick up some plot point they had previously passed over.
Before we get into the story, we need to deal with changes in the cast.  The cast on the TV show is very different from the one in the comic book at this point.  For one thing, alaska vacation tour packages there are no Dixon brothers in the comic book (although they are rumored to be added in at some point in the future).  Sophia and Dale are still alive and well in the comic.  Michonne has yet to show up.
There are additional characters in the comic.  Allen and Donna are a couple with twin boys, Ben and Billy.  Donna is killed on a stop between the camp in Atlanta and Hershel s farm leaving a distraught Allen to raise Ben and Billy on his own.  On the show, Allen, Donna and Ben were introduced in the mid-season finale of season 3.  But you probably didn t know who they were.  Once again, Donna died but on the show most viewers probably didn t catch her name before she died.  Twin Billy has been left out of the show entirely.
Tyreese joins Rick s crew after what would have been season one on the show.  Since Daryl isn t on the show, Tyreese functions as his right-hand man in the comic.  Tyreese is accompanied by his daughter, Julie, and her boyfriend, Chris.  On the show, Tyreese joins the cast much later.  And instead of his daughter, he is accompanied by his sister, Sasha.
In the comic, Hershel has even more children.  Like on the show, some of Hershel s family died on the farm.  But in the comic, he still has four living children at this point; Maggie, Billy, Rachel and Susie.  On the show, Hershel, Maggie and Beth (who does not appear in the comic book at all) flee the farm with Rick when it is over-run with zombies.  In the comic, alaska vacation tour packages Hershel blames Rick for the death of his children and threatens to kill him if he doesn t leave the farm immediately.
Glenn stays behind on the farm with Maggie and the rest of the Greene clan including Otis (the neighbor who shot Carl and was killed by Shane on the TV show).  Everyone else was forced to leave the farm with Rick.
Also, there are some different romantic pairings in the comic book.  Dale and Andrea are a couple despite their age difference.  Andrea points out that regardless of age their life expectancy alaska vacation tour packages is short.  So what difference does it make?  Carol starts up a romantic relationship with Tyreese.  And Rick and Lori s marriage is a lot happier in spite of the fact she may be carrying alaska vacation tour packages Shane s baby.  She is much earlier in her pregnancy than she was at the start of season 3 on the show.
Inside the prison, the group is joined by four inmates; Axel, Dexter, Thomas and Andrew.  On the show, there are five inmates who are similar to the ones in the comic.  The differences are pretty drastic.  On the show, most on the inmates were dispatched almost as soon as they were introduced.  But the comic spent more time in the prison so the inmates got a lot more attention.
Another major difference between the comic book and the TV show is how the prison is presented.  In the show, the prison is a terrible place in stark contrast to the suburbs of Woodbury.  In the comic, most of the characters are thrilled with the prison which ironically represents hope and a second chance to them.  The cafeteria, for example, is stocked with more food than they need.  Rick s group has guns and the inmates don t.  So Rick is able to call the shots in the prison at first.
As soon as the group has cleaned out a wing of the prison, Rick decides to go back to the farm for Hershel and the others.  When he arrives alaska vacation tour packages at the farm, he finds Hershel surprisingly receptive to the idea of moving to the prison.  Things on the farm have gotten worse as the weather warmed up.  Apparently the cold of winter kept the zombies at bay.  Hershel apologizes to Rick for threatening to kill him and agrees to relocate his family to the relatively safe prison.  Otis stays behind to mind the livestock.
Shortly after Rick returns with the Greenes, tragedy strikes.  I will skip over the details as some version of them may yet play out on the TV show.  But this tragedy is how Rick learns that every one is infected.  There was no visit to the CDC in the comic book.  After learning this, Rick decides to leave the prison alaska vacation tour packages again to dig up Shane and kill him again.
Once again, Rick returns to tragedy.  Hershel s two youngest daughters have been beheaded! alaska vacation tour packages Lori blamed prison inmate Dexter who had previously admitted to murdering his girlfriend before the apocalypse. alaska vacation tour packages She locked Dexter up in a cell until his guilt could be proven.
While imprisoned, Dexter instructs Andrew to get into the administrative wing of the prison.  He says that is where all the weapons alaska vacation tour packages will be.  Once they are armed, the can take the prison back from Rick and his gang.  Until then, they are essentially prisoners again.  Andrew, who is Dexter s lover, agrees.
Dexter s innocence is proven alaska vacation tour packages when the killer strikes again.  Thomas alaska vacation tour packages (who claimed to be a white-collar criminal) alaska vacation tour packages attacks Andrea.  Although he cuts off part of her ear and scars her face, Andrea escapes.  Rick beats Thomas nearly to death in full view of the rest of the survivors until Tyreese pulls him off.  Rick insists that the only solution to the problem is capital punishment.
Rick sets Dexter free and sets about executing Thomas.  But before they can hang him, he is set free by Patricia (Otis girlfriend who was killed on the farm in the TV show).  Thomas repays her by trying to kill her too.  She is saved by Maggie who executes Thomas in cold blood.  Rick and company throw the body outside the gates where the zombies have gathered.  Hershel watches as the zombies devour the man who killed his youngest alaska vacation tour packages daughters.
After the chaos settles, Rick decides to talk to Patricia about setting Thomas free.  But before he can, he is interrupted by Dexter and Andrew.  They are armed and staging a revolt.  Patricia has joined them.  Dexter demands that Rick and his gang leave the prison or he will kill them.  But Rick is more concerned with where the guns came from.  When Andrew retrieved them from A-block, he set free a bunch of zombies that were locked in there.
The courtyard is swarmed by zombies.  Dexter has no choice but to share his guns with Rick and his crew.  They fight together against the zombies.  At one point, Rick saves Dexter from an approaching zombie.  Dexter responds by saying that Rick should have let the zombie kill him.  Because he is still going to take back the prison alaska vacation tour packages after the zombies are dealt with.  Rick shoots Dexter and makes it look like friendly fire.  Tyreese is the only one to see him do it.
This entire sequence makes a lot more sense than what happened in the show.  On the show, Tomas stands in for Dexter.  Tomas is very obviously dangerous.  When they are in a firefight, Tomas attempts to kill Rick instead of the other way around.  Only after repeated attempts on his life does Rick kill Tomas. alaska vacation tour packages And when he does, it is in cold blood.
Then Andrew runs away much as he does in the comic book.  But on the show, Rick follows him and locks him in a zombie-filled area of the prison.  Rick s motivation for doing this is never really explained.  Later, TV Andrew is shown to have survived what appeared to be certain death.  How he did this is also never explained.  He intentionally releases zombies into the prison as part of some misguided revenge scheme.  TV Andrew is then killed by Oscar who did not exist in the comic book.
Back to the comic book, Otis has returned from the Greene farm.  While the fighting is going on in the prison, Otis is swarmed by zombies outside the gate.  He only survives because he is saved by a mysterious figure.  This mystery woman is Michonne.  She asks to be allowed to live in the prison.  With Otis vouching for her, she is admitted under a few conditions: 1. no weapons  2. no zombie pets  3. she will be locked in her cell at night.  Michonne beheads her zombie pets, hands over her sword and agrees to be locked in her cell at night.
Following Dexter s revolt, Patricia is an outcast in the group.  Axel tries to integrate by offering to help and distancing himself from the other three inmates.  Rick takes a group of men to clear out A-block.  He offers to let Axel come along.  Allen also volunteers.  The group splits up.  Tyreese and Dale find a generator.  Allen gets bitten on the leg by a zombie.
Rick goes into action and amputates Allen s leg much as he did Hershel s on the show.  But since Rick doesn t have any medical knowledge, Allen is in danger alaska vacation tour packages of bleeding out.  Fortunately, Hershel comes along in time to stop the bleeding and save Allen s life.
When the rest of the gang finds out, Carol freaks out a little.  She goes looking for Tyreese.  But when she finds him, he is cheating on her with Michonne.  Later, we see Michonne having a conversation in her cell about fitting in with the group.  Andrea comes along and we realize Michonne has been talking to herself.  Un
