I reserved an intermediate sized car this past weekend from Avis at the Oakland International Airport and had a nightmare of an experience. When we were given the keys to our Hyundai Elantra (Pontiac G6 or equivalent), we walked out to the car and found the right front tire low on air, and the car incredibly scratched and dented. I returned to the Avis counter and waited in line again. I was then given a replacement vehicle of a Nissan Altima Hybrid. We walked out to the car. My wife, who is a well-known hand model sat in the passenger's seat and attempted to adjust the seat back. Unfortunately, the plastic cover was missing on the handle and she sliced last minute vacation packages her hand. We drove the car to the check out station where we were greeted by the security guard. I looked down at the fuel guage and noticed that although I'd paid more than $56 for the pre-pay last minute vacation packages gas option, there was only 3/4 of a tank of gas registered in the car. We were told to drive the car back onto the lot and to speak with the representative one more time. I waited in line again and was given a small credit of $20. This back and forth wasted more than an hour at the Avis lot, I was late for a scheduled dinner in Santa Rosa, arrived late at our hotel, and had to wake up early the next morning to attend an event where I was medical director for a half marathon. And if I'd known that I would end up renting a hybrid, using only 1/4 of a tank for my 220 mile weekend, I'd never have bought last minute vacation packages the $56 pre-pay fuel option! This was easily the worst experience I've ever had with a rental car, bar none.
