“I never really would have considered myself among the ranks of the people who get a Rhodes scholars

Unlike many university students who take time off from their studies to travel around the Continent, Sarah McCuaig has never been to Europe. That will change next fall, as McCuaig, a 22-year-old Immunology student, will be packing enterprise rent a car marketing strategy her bags for the University of Oxford enterprise rent a car marketing strategy after becoming McGill's 134th Rhodes Scholar.
"I never really would have considered myself among the ranks of the people who get a Rhodes scholarship," she admitted. "I m not a Dr. Penfield or a Bill Clinton for that matter. But my roommate … was the first person who suggested that I apply for this about a year and a half ago. At first I laughed at her suggestion enterprise rent a car marketing strategy but… ultimately I just decided that nothing ventured is nothing gained and went ahead with it."
That uncertainty didn't lessen enterprise rent a car marketing strategy following her interview with the Rhodes representatives. "To be honest I felt that I had no chance in the world because enterprise rent a car marketing strategy I thought that my interview didn't go that well," McCuaig said. "When I received the call I was speechless I had absolutely no inkling it came as a shock and it's all very surreal right now.
Established in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarships rewards individuals who have achieved high academic standing and who have demonstrated respect for their fellows, an unselfish spirit and the potential for leadership. The world's oldest and pre-eminent academic fellowship, the Rhodes covers two years of study, valued at approximately, $20,000 U.S. per year, with the possibility of renewal for a third year, at Oxford. All educational costs, including travel, are paid on the Scholar s behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations.
On top of being an award-winning student, McCuaig is an accomplished distance runner and team captain of the McGill track and cross-country teams. One of the most decorated student-athletes at the University, in both the classroom and on the track, the conference all-star runner earned Academic All-Canadian status, made the Principal s Student-athlete Honour enterprise rent a car marketing strategy Roll and qualified for the Dean's Honour List.
McCuaig, enterprise rent a car marketing strategy who received a Greville Smith entrance scholarship to McGill in 2009, valued at $10,000 per year for up to four years, has also won a plethora of academic and athletic bursaries from the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence, which will be announcing her among their latest honorees tonight at their 27th annual university awards gala at the Delta Hotel in Montreal.
In her sophomore season, McCuaig was named Team MVP of both the track and cross-country squads, was voted 2010-11 conference athlete of the year in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ), as the McGill Martlets captured enterprise rent a car marketing strategy their first of three straight Quebec university titles in cross-country. She also received McGill s Uldis Auders Award as the top sophomore who best combines academic success with athletic performance.
enterprise rent a car marketing strategy McCuaig enterprise rent a car marketing strategy has twice been honored as the RSEQ athlete who best combines enterprise rent a car marketing strategy academics with athletics and community service for her volunteer work in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital and with the Student Athletic Council at McGill.
So while McCuaig is looking forward to her studies at Oxford, she also has another reason to be excited to be heading to the venerable institution. "I will be thrilled to run for Oxford and train on the same track where Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile, she said.
McCuaig spends a large portion of her time at the Meakins-Christie enterprise rent a car marketing strategy Laboratories – one of the premiere centres for research on respiratory diseases in the world – under the supervision of Dr. James Martin.
"I'm studying respiratory diseases the effects of oxidated stress on molecules that are implicated in asthma," she says. "And what s neat is the connection between what I study and athletics because asthma is a condition that affects runners. I witnessed it in my teammates and my competitors and unfortunately this fall, I ve begun to experience it a bit myself. So it just makes me able to connect the two things on a molecular level."
But while McCuaig is understandably excited about earning a Rhodes Scholarship, the news is tinged with some sadness. "I'm so happy to know now where I m going to be next year but it's kind of bittersweet enterprise rent a car marketing strategy because McGill will always feel like home to me," she said. "It s hard to imagine leaving here at this point, leaving such great friends and memories and support from, not only my professors, but from my coaches and other members of the athletics community. It'll be a tough transition but an exciting one."

On the eve of the third of four  Pasadena Pops  concerts at the  Los Angeles County Arboretum Botanical Garden , the Symphony and Pops organization named multi-platinum-selling, two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy-nominated Michael Feinstein as Principal Conductor of the orchestra and successor to the late Marvin Hamlisch during a press conference at the Pasadena City Hall rotunda Friday.
Feinstein joined Hamlisch as the headliner guest entertainer at the July 21 Pops program, which drew a record-setting Pops audience of about 4,000 but turned out to be the final concert for Hamlisch, who died suddenly on August 6. A guest conductor had already been scheduled for Saturday s La Dolce Vita concert (August 18)  and another guest conductor, Larry Drake, has been recruited to stand in for the final Pops concert  on Sept. 8 Gershwin On The Green.
Feinstein will take over the Pops summer concerts in 2013, when the Pops has added a fifth concert event to their summer schedule announced before Hamlisch died Simply Sinatra on June 8, Bernadette Peters in Concert on June 29, Wicked Divas on July 13, Classical Mystery Tour music of the Beatles on August 10 and an event still billed as Marvin salutes America featuring the JPL Chorus on September 7. And the Pops own Beatles program sato travel center on Aug. 10 coincides with Cal Phils scheduled Rodgers, Hammerstein and Gershwin performance.

Michael Feinstein is simply the right fit, having already charmed capacity crowds at the Arboretum, says Paul Jan Zdunek, Pops CEO, adding, sato travel center Not only is he a consummate musician, engaging communicator and master entertainer, his lifetime dedication to The Great American Songbook and countless national accomplishments uniquely positions him to build on Marvin's legacy and lead the Pasadena Pops to new levels of artistic success.
"To be connected with the Pasadena sato travel center Pops is simply a great honor, and thrilling as well. It was the passing of our irreplaceable Marvin sato travel center Hamlisch that has given me the desire to conduct, and every step of the way I will have him on my mind and in my heart, says Michael Feinstein, adding, It was because of Marvin that I wish to do this because he had a great love for the Pasadena Pops and my experience with everybody last month was so positive on every level.
Melinda Shea, President of the Board, announced the creation the Marvin Hamlisch Chair, an operating fund that will support the legacy of Marvin Hamlisch and the unique programming he developed sato travel center for the Pasadena Pops.

Although the concept of "rock star" seems to stretch further and further into weird new shapes with every passing year, there are few less likely than Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields. His music owes more to '80s synth-pop and pre-rock songsmiths like Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart than anything "rock," but there isn't a better category out there for him, either. We'll never see The Beatles perform together again, as only Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still alive. So Saturday night's performance by the Classical Mystery Tour with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in nearby Alpharetta is pretty close as it gets.
The four members of the group do their best to sound just like the members of the iconic band. It's not the same, but it is very entertaining. They are able to provide renditions of many Beatles classics that sound very good, especially with the backing of a full orchestra.
ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals Many Beatles tunes make use of instruments other than the guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, so the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra played a big role in the evening. Conductor Martin Herman is a key member of Classical Mystery Tour, having transcribed musical scores from Beatles recordings. He even sat down at the piano for one tune.
The most visible part of Classical Mystery Tour is its members. The group features Jim Owen (John Lennon) on rhythm guitar, piano, and vocals; Tony Kishman (Paul McCartney) on bass guitar, piano, and vocals; John Brosnan (George Harrison) on lead guitar and vocals; and Chris Camilleri (Ringo Starr) on drums and vocals.
You wouldn't ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals mistake these four Americans ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals as The Beatles, though they do their best to dress like them in costumes from the 1960s and 1970s, including the colorful outfits seen in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." The English accents they affected while speaking adds to the feelings the real deal produced.
They used a combination of speaking as if they really were The Beatles and a little comedy to set the stage. The crowd, a mix of ages with quite a few families attending, ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals seemed ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals to appreciate the effort, and liked the songs even better.
It was my second concert at the amphitheater in two nights, and while I enjoy the blues and jazzy sounds of many of the tunes performed by The Dukes of September better, I enjoyed this ASO concert with the Classical Mystery Tour more. It's hard not to like a "Beatles" concert, with so many classic songs.
ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals Introducing the song "All You Need Is Love," the singer portraying John Lennon asked who remembers the '60s, only to come back with the rejoinder, "If you remember the '60s, you weren't really there."
The George Harrison song, "Here Comes the Sun" came next, and after a gloomy looking day that had rain falling a little more than an hour earlier, it was welcome. The sky even brightened with the clouds clearing quite a bit, so the timing of the song worked ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals well.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra really began to show its how its member can excel at any kind of music with the next song, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Classical music isn't all they can play, as they proved throughout the evening.
ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals Other favorites ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals included "Eleanor Rigby," "A Day in the Life" and "Strawberry Fields Forever." When it came time for "Penny Lane," the crowd showed its appreciation for a horn solo from the orchestra, bursting into applause once the solo ended.
More of the set list included: "Life Goes On," "Yellow Submarine," which had more than a few audience members singing along," and "Come Together" before conductor Martin Herman took his turn at the piano for George ft lauderdale short term apartment rentals Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," another White Album favorite. "Dear Prudence" was next up and then Paul McCartney's "Long and Winding Road" before the group turned to songs that came after The Beatles broke up.
Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die," the theme song from the James Bond film of the same name got the "solo" performances started. John Lennon's work had a turn next, with "Imagine" drawing the crowd into another time.

There are only 86 hotels on this month s list.
Priority Club introduced Last Minute Reward Nights in 2011 with the stated intention of expanding these rewards to more dates. For now these discount rewards have only been offered on the first full weekend of each month. Hopefully they will be exapnded soon to other weekends in the month.
You need to use the geographic search feature to easily locate a hotel since the master list is only sorted by either cost in points or hotel brand without a state or country description. This has been my complaint since the program launched, but Priority Club has not added geographic data to the main list. There is a country and state search tool on the left side of the page.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will also perform in the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for the first time. The band will play in St. John's, NL on June 3 and in Halifax, NS on a date to be announced shortly.
Following the Canadian dates, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will head to Europe for a tour which includes their already announced headlining performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on June 22. Shows in Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, England, Switzerland, France, and Italy are currently included on the itinerary.
It doesn't seem like there are enough breaks in the tour yet...but I'm just thinking about potential europe travel custom packages fatigue -- Also, getting everything from Lucca to Mannheim in 24 hours - seems a bit rushed. Wichita, KS????? Lived in the city for 9 years praying they would go there. No! Move away and they go there. Haven't been back there in 4 years...Yup! Considering a road trip (depending on the seats I can pull up!).

I used to be a little insecure about whether I could sing the blues authentically. I can do my version of it, and this has our stamp on it. It would be an empty exercise if we weren t bringing something to the party. ~Tom Petty
TBBW: No, not at all. Its just we've been married 16 years and it's the first time I've ever heard you listen to any of his music. Let alone write a piece about him. I'd say I'm a little surprised and curious… Hmm, must be the Mojo that s got ya hooked And you're The Blues Blogger. I should have known it.
A little while back I got my first opportunity to hear some of the tracks luxury travel by private car tours on Tom Petty and The Heartbreaker's new release Mojo. Yes, I was familiar with all the hits, but Mojo , the group's first studio release in 8 years, really caught my attention. Right from the opening track "Jefferson Jericho Blues," a bluesy rock shuffle, and the Allman-esque First Flash of Freedom I was immediately intrigued. I even updated luxury travel by private car tours my facebook account saying so. The last time I was this taken by a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers album I was a teenager listening to the tune Breakdown. How the years have a way of passing by
Born and raised in Gainesville, Florida, Petty attended Gainesville High School. He became enamored with rock n roll at the age of ten after being invited by his uncle to the set of the movie Follow luxury travel by private car tours That Dream where the young Petty met Elvis Presley. Like so many musical souls in the sixties, Petty knew his destiny the moment he saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Petty formed the band the Sundowners with guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench and was later known as Mudcrutch . A lot of the influences on Mojo developed from this association. Mudcrutch went their separate ways for a while, but eventually Petty, Tench and Campbell hooked up with Ron Blair and Stan Lynch resulting in the first Heartbreakers line-up. Their debut album Tom Petty the Heartbreakers and the strength of the song Breakdown eventually made the top 40. At the time the band became popular in The United Kingdom while touring with Nils Lofgren… The rest of the story leading up to 2010 is certainly a musical journey that is well documented in rock music history.
In my recording studio luxury travel by private car tours days, (many moons ago) one of my personal peeves was how long it took some artists to get a particular snare sound or guitar tone. Sometimes it would be months before they would get it right. I used to marvel at the players who'd walk in and complete an album in a handful of sessions. Often those were blues or jazz influenced sessions. There's just something about that pure raw sound that always suited my personal taste.
Amazon.com Widgets Of course it takes a lot of experience to produce something that sounds this natural and appealing. After four decades, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers show they re more than capable of rising to the occasion. Recorded mostly live, with very few overdubs, what you hear on Mojo is what the band played in the studio, in one take. And that's what I think really made me gravitate me toward this awesome new release more than anything else.
There appears to be a trend these days where seasoned veterans are going back to their roots and playing the music which initially influenced them. With this latest release, Petty lets the Heartbreakers come upfront; letting us witness how good of a band they really are. They blend all that energy together and create a fun, loose and vibrant scene. It s a cool showcase of blues influenced rock with tremendous songwriting luxury travel by private car tours and musicianship. And one I m sure fans old and new will agree adds a new dimension to the band s discography luxury travel by private car tours and live shows. luxury travel by private car tours A great way to kick start summer!
There are so many really well written luxury travel by private car tours and thoroughly satisfying tunes on Mojo that I found it difficult to pick favorites. Perhaps that's where you can help. Have you heard Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers latest release? luxury travel by private car tours Do you have any favorite selections from the album you d like to share? Are you planning to see them during their Mojo Tour this summer? Please leave your comments after the tour schedule below.
An excellent re-intro..Tom Petty really blow,s me away here with his Mojo sounds a return back to roots..actually all bands use to work a bit this way back in the 60-70,s..and great stuff came out i,ll be going to get his new album..its going to be my road album windows down, cruising on the highways or on a vacation for sure Nice..very nice to hear this sounds
.. this is so great, Tom Petty just keeps on going, you never know what they will do next back to their roots or blow you away with something completely new . and again as always, the Blues Blogger scores another hit with this fabulous review, with his personal touch . thanks again BB !!
I instantly liked his music when I first heard him in the late 60s or early 70 s but I never thought about how talented he and the Heartbreakers had to be to pull it off. It was great fun to watch them in studio. I ll never underestimate them again.

2012 PGA Tour Q-School Finals , 2012 PGA Tour Q-School Second Stage , Alex Noren , Hank Kuehne , Jam

Tensions and emotions ran high on Friday in the final round at Plantation Preserve Golf Course Club in Plantation, Florida (near Fort Lauderdale), one of the six sites around the country holding the second stage of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament, known fondly as Q-school.
rental cars seattle wa There s always an enormous amount of pressure for players trying to advance to finals, but this year there seems to be even more than usual. Why? The reply was simple: It s the last year or It s the last chance. (Or as I like to call it: Q-school deathwatch. )
Of course they re referring to the massive makeover of the Tour s qualifying process . The 2012 edition of Q-school is the last one to offer a direct pathway to the PGA Tour through the system that dates back to 1965. RIP .
I know I m not the only person who already feels nostalgia for the Cinderella Story where anyone can sign up for Q-school and endure the difficult four stages with the possibility of finishing in the top 25 in finals and earn a spot to play in the big leagues.
Under the new system, the qualifying tournament will only award entry to the Web.com Tour, the equivalent of Triple A in golf. P GA Tour cards will be given to 50 players via a four-tournament series called the Web.com Tour Finals, featuring the top-75 money winners on the Web.com Tour money list, along with guys who finish 126-200 on the PGA Tour FedExCup points list at the end of the regular season.
Which is being marketed as a ploy to strengthen the PGA Tour s developmental circuit. Thing is, players on the Web.com Tour are no longer young guys out of college or in their 20s and even 30s trying to chase the dream.
There are also former PGA Tour players who have fallen out of form later in their careers, trying to stay in form until they reach the age minimum for the Champions Tour. And of course, there are always guys for example, 37-year-old Tommy Two Gloves Gainey who won the McGladrey Classic last month that bounce back-and-forth between the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour.
As we know, spending a year on the Web.com Tour has never hurt a player, but if you re ranked No. 49 in the world, like Alex Noren, who has three wins on the European Tour, it seems like it d be a bit of a drag. Good news is Noren finished T18 to get past the second stage site in Humble, Texas.
Same goes for world No. 91 Ross Fisher, who was a member of the victorious European Ryder Cup squad in 2010. The Englishman has played primarily on the European Tour where he has won four times. Given the circumstances with the change rental cars seattle wa in Q-school, Fisher decided to make the leap and try to earn his PGA Tour membership this year.
I admit it was a bit weird to see him grinding it out at Plantation Preserve, where he ultimately advanced to finals by finishing at 11-under in a tie for 13th. He cut it a little close with bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16, but he birdied the par-5 18th to give himself some breathing room.
Last chance, he told me after closing with a strong four-under on the final nine to post 67, 17-under total, and finish second to Web.com Tour veteran Rob Oppenheim, who won medalist honors by four strokes at Plantation Preserve.
Kim, who goes by Whee, turned pro two years ago and played mostly on the One Asia Tour. In fact, his competitive debut in the U.S. was the first stage of Q-school. Last year he said he tried to qualify for the Japan Tour.
He said he felt pressure on Friday because it s Q-school. Playing in the final group with Oppenheim and Kris Blanks, he handled his nerves like a veteran. Kim is still learning a few things, like not putting the flag on the ground. rental cars seattle wa His caddie rental cars seattle wa said they were getting to that part and he had to tell him twice that in the U.S. you drop the pin.
If you watch on TV or in person, you ll notice on the PGA Tour, one of the caddies is always holding the flag (they pass it off when their player rental cars seattle wa is done putting, so the caddie of the player last to putt out will replace it ). It s a minor detail, but kind of funny in a very inside golf way. Basically, a tiny rookie faux pas that gives veterans a chuckle.
There was a lot to take in on Friday, but I mostly watched the last two groups. I walked ahead several times to try and get score updates since there aren t any leaderboards and I wanted an idea of how the field was doing. Was anyone blowing it in the final round? Was anyone coming up in the clutch?
The two players who stood out to me were young guns: Whee Kim and recent Georgia Tech grad James White (who both could stand to work on their pace of play, particularly the latter I mean, this was Ben Crane slow ).
I watched Nate Smith, who started the day on the outside looking in, drain a huge par-putt from 16 feet on No. 16. There was no one watching, but Nate reacted with a massive Tiger-like fist-pump. rental cars seattle wa (Oh, it s pretty amusing to watch these guys react because there are only a few people in the gallery at most, and in this case, I was the lone witness outside of his playing partners and caddies.) Turned out it gave Nate some momentum and he went on to birdie No. 17 and post a -4, 67, -11 total to safely advance to finals.
Um, yes, I could. I know it s just golf (and so does he), but I got so caught up into the intensity that I forgot to eat and didn t drink enough fluids, so I was the one who almost ended up sick and feeling like puking on Friday afternoon.
When I walked in the clubhouse, this was the uneasy, tense scene. Looks like a happy bunch, huh? They re the players who stuck around to wait for scores to be posted. There are only two or three times a year where you really see guys crowded around a leaderboard U.S. Open and British Open qualifiers and Q-school.
I ve covered Q-school finals the last two years, and for longtime readers, you know that it s one of my favorite events of the year. Yes, I m a masochist and weirdo, but I ve always loved the purity of Q-school no corporate logos, no sponsor tents, no ropes, no electronic leaderboards; just golf and the feel-good Cinderella stories. rental cars seattle wa As you also probably know, I m a sucker for the underdog, rental cars seattle wa so I enjoy the tales of journeymen who have spent years grinding on the mini tours or the young rising stars trying to break out.
Anyway, in the past, quite a few players have said the pressure at second stage was more intense than it was at finals for them. Which was and is understandable. You see, if you reach Q-school finals, you re guaranteed status rental cars seattle wa of some kind: full PGA Tour exemption, full Web.com Tour exemption rental cars seattle wa or conditional Web.com exemption. But if you don t get past second, rental cars seattle wa then it s back to the mini tours and Monday qualifiers for many players. With the revamping of the current system, some guys will have to wait two years, instead of one, for another chance to earn or re-earn a spot in the big leagues.
I imagine the sting of missing by a shot is going to last longer than usual. Hank Kuehne wasn t the biggest fan of the par-5 18th at Plantation Preserve. On Friday he closed with a double-bogey to shoot one-under 70, nine-under total. A mere bogey would have granted him a trip to finals.
Jamie Lovemark, the 2010 Web.com Tour money-list winner and former-can t-miss guy, also posted nine-under to miss by one. He should get some starts on the Web.com rental cars seattle wa Tour next season since he finished 85th on the money list.
Like I said, I got too caught up with the intensity of second stage (man, I m such a dork) that I forgot to hydrate rental cars seattle wa properly, so I m still a bit delirious. Hope most of this made sense (and apologies for rambling).

Hi! My name is Stephanie Wei. I grew up in Seattle. I live in Manhattan, NYC. I played competitive golf for ten years in the junior and college ranks. I went to Yale, where I played on the women's golf team and graduated in '05 with a B.A. in History.
I still enjoy pegging it, but don't ask me my handicap because I stopped keeping one when I left for college. More important, I'm feisty and I like to smile a lot. I also love sports, spandex and surprises.

I was watching a cartoon with my 2-year-old the other day (Handy Manny, for those of you with toddlers) bags for travel and the episode was about going to a miniature golf course. In the middle of the story, the guy who runs the course comes out and starts giving putting lessons, while another character refers to him as an "expert golf instructor."
Now I realize this is only a cartoon, but at what point did mini course owners become expert golf instructors? I mean, miniature golf isn't real golf, right? There's really no skill involved and you can't teach luck (can you)? Let's face it, an expert golf instructor who works at a mini course is laughable, but to the writers of the show, it seemed totally plausible.
Anyway, let's forget bags for travel about the cartoon and look at this from an adult perspective: The reality is many people are only exposed to golf through a miniature course. bags for travel Perhaps their parents bags for travel took them as a kid or perhaps they went on a first date - whatever. bags for travel But to them, mini golf is golf.
Sure, these people are vaguely aware of a much larger version of the game played by old folks, but this is as far from reality as science fiction is to them. Don't believe me? Ask a non-golfer if they've ever played golf. You will undoubtably hear the following response: "I've played mini golf!"
I think we golfers forget sometimes that many others have no true grasp of real golf. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to knock miniature golf - it certainly is a fun game. What I'm trying to do is show that many people don't realize how completely different mini golf and regular golf really bags for travel are.
For example, do they realize that mini golf is only one aspect bags for travel (putting) of regular golf? And do they realize that the putting they are doing is completely different than the putting we do? I mean, a good mini golf putting stroke isn't going to translate out on the greens of your local 18-hole, 7,000-yard course, is it?
Well, at least that cartoon was trying to incorporate the game of golf in some manner and kudos for them doing so. But can you imagine bags for travel if regular golf was more like its Mini Me version? You show up to pay your greens fees and they hand you a bag of clubs and a dozen balls! And all the water hazards are painted bags for travel blue instead of having real water! Now that I could get used to. Putting into a clown's mouth on the 18th? Not so much.
Hello Greg, Good blog post. I don t agree with everything you say, but I found it very interesting. I play Miniature Golf on a serious level as a member of the British Minigolf Association. I have played in lots of tournaments in the UK as well as for the Great Britain team in Finland and Sweden. There are many prestigious local, regional, national and international competitions out there. I don t agree that the game/sport of Minigolf is all about luck . Yes, some courses are luck-based, but there are lots of courses out there that are skill-based. In some of our tournaments we also use multiple specialist Minigolf balls and will put in hours of practice to get the perfect line for a hole-in-one. You are correct in that many people don t realise how completely different Golf and Minigolf are. They are separate and distinct sports. My Putting when playing regular Golf/Pitch Putt (which I do occasionally) has improved since taking bags for travel up Minigolf, but for the most part the Putting and shot-style bags for travel is completely different - in Miniature Golf we play lots of rebound shots off the wall/rails etc. I think if you were to listen to an expert minigolf bags for travel instructor at a Minigolf course and/or a Pro Minigolf you d be surprised by the history bags for travel of the game, its development and the variety of courses and competitions out there. Looking forward to reading more of your posts. All the best. Yours in sport, Richard Richard Gottfried British Minigolf Association (BMGA) Tour Player Great Britain International Minigolfer Member of the Midlands Minigolf Club
@Richard - that s great! I can t believe (but should have known better) that there is a Minigolf association! Thanks for all the insight - we might have to write a follow-up at some point that features your minigolf tour!
Greg, I can second Richard s discussion here. The U.S.A. also has 2 professional miniature golf associations (USPMGA and the PPA) that have serious tournaments and require many hours of practice. Again, while there are courses where luck is a large factor, many of these tournaments are played on courses that involve precise repetition of putting strokes, angles and speed. I ve played in several of the USPMGA tournaments over the years and the level of skill is quite amazing as well as the intensity of the competition at times (I would argue that minigolf playoff holes are actually more exciting than a golf playoff). I definitely look forward to any follow up you do on miniature golf! Pat Sheridan Member United States Professional Miniature Golf Association (USPMGA) Founder - The Putting Penguin (www.theputtingpenguin.com)
@The Putting Penguin - I need to do more research before writing about stuff I don t know anything about - LOL. I wonder if one of the writers of the Handy Manny cartoon is a competitive minigolfer? Anyway, do you guys play on the themed mini golf courses bags for travel the general public plays on or are there specific courses for the tours?
We play on all manner of courses in tournaments. They have to be a certain standard/quality before they can be used in a tournament. bags for travel Some courses are OK for local events, while international competitions require courses to be at another level. My wife and I have visited 520 courses in the UK and some overseas and we still haven t played every format of the game - there are many many many variations. The World Governing Body for Minigolf - The World Minigolf Sport Federation - recognises four types of Minigolf, one of these is Minigolf Open Standard (MOS) which is pretty much a catch-all term for any courses not of a continental European bags for travel standard (they are known as Concrete/Beton, Miniaturegolf/Eternit and Feltgolf/Swedish Felt). In the UK most of the courses would be deemed MOS , but the public would call them Minigolf, Adventure Golf, or the very British term Crazy Golf . Then there are Putt Putt courses that are another distinct type and now mainly found in the USA, but also popular bags for travel in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Much like Crazy Golf is a catch-all term for Minigolf in the UK, Putt Putt has become a way to desribe any type of Miniature Golf by some members bags for travel of the public. Once you scratch the surface...!
Greg, We play on courses that are open to the general public bags for travel when not being used by a tournament. The USPMGA plays tournaments on all different types of course but they are primarily adventure style ones where the obstacles are rocks and various banking bags for travel of the greens. However, I play in one USPMGA tournament that features obstacles such as the loop, toboggan, a spinning ships wheel, etc. The PPA plays all of their tournaments on Putt Putt courses which are very standardized like Richard mentioned and are a bit different than the traditional miniature golf course most people think about. Pat
I think it s a real shame when my sport gets knocked by someone who tags it as just a fun game! I fully respect the skill of the club and pro players of the full course sport and I still take my bag of clubs out on occasions. My version of the sport requires just as much practice, focus and mental strength bags for travel especially when playing 126 holes over the space of 2 days. Novice players are always welcome at the pro-tour events, not sure the larger version is so open or patient? Really enjoyed reading this blog :-)
