We are flying into Long Beach and need to rent a car for our 4 days in Carslbad/San Diego. We'll then drive up to DLR, check in to the hotel, and hubby will take the rental car back to Long Beach and get a taxi or shuttle service back. Our family of 4 will then need a shuttle or some type of transportation back to Long Beach at the end of our trip.
We just rented a car out of SNA in November for 10 days from Thrifty. It was super cheap (I think something like $28 per day!) it may be cheaper for you in the long run just to rent a car for the entire trip. Not to mention the least amount of time you have to spend on I-5 the better. Don't forget to check with your car insurance carrier before you leave. Most full coverage policies cover rental cars. Most rental car companies will try to talk you into their $9 per day (we cover everything) coverage.
The shuttle services seemed high to me when I priced them last December. Then it ended up being 4 of us. We used a taxi both ways to Disneyland area. The company coming from the airport gave us a flat rate of $45 (just your DH shuttle would be cheaper). Meter read in the low $60s. Our return trip the hotel arranged a cab for us, they charged the meter rate of $63. We made one big circle, too as the one from the airport discover card car rental insurance went around the freeways above DL and LB. And the return trip went around below.

We just returned from our vacation. We also used Jet Blue and flew into Long Beach. There are several car companies on site at the airport. We rented from Hertz but Enterprise as well as a few others were also located there. We used Hotwire and got a full size car for under $200 for 7 days. I think it was around $160. Super convenient and quick. I would totally do it again. We actually decided that we prefer flying into LB over SNA. Smaller airport, shorter lines and super easy drive to DL.
We used a shuttle van at Long Beach, but there was 9 of us. Look online for shuttles. You're going to LOVE Long Beach airport. It's the smallest airport I've ever seen. So Simple and fast!! There's only 4 gates with 1 room for all of them. You board on the tarmac and get your luggage outside!

I've been at airports where it was 'please proceed through security and to THE gate'. Actually one (internationally) didn't even have security! That was on Bora Bora (we had to go through security on Tahiti when we got on a plane big enough to go farther than just the nearby islands).
