New Eyes on America: The Genius of Richard Caton Woodville will be on display at The Walters Art Mus

The Woodvilles were a wealthy merchant sea world discount tickets family who owned homes on Charles and Mulberry Streets. But instead of going into the family business, Richard showed a knack for the arts. When he was 20, he moved with Mary, his young bride, to study painting in Germany.
Woodville lived in Europe the rest of his life and tragically sea world discount tickets died at age 30 from a morphine overdose. But in that 10 year period, he produced some of the most commercially successful paintings of his day. And Baltimore figures prominently.

In the exhibition, along with the original artwork, Woodville s preliminary drawings are included. In the drawing for The Card Players, take note of even more evidence of Baltimore: a flyer for a racecourse that used to exist in Canton, and a notice for Lock Hospital on Pratt Street, to name a few.
Was Woodville homesick? Or was he trying to convey a deeper message? Whatever it was, his impact cannot be underestimated. Woodville shipped The Card Players back on a steamer to New York, and it was his first commercial success.
