We are headed to see the Men's NCAA Basketball games at the New Orleans Arena next week. On that Thursday, we have about a two hour break, maybe a little more, between the afternoon and evening games. Any recommedations on a good place to eat that we can walk to from the Arena/Superdome area? We are eating at Bayona the night before so something casual and relaxed would be great. Thanks in advance!
You can walk notably further cruise ship grand princess than the 6 blocks or so from the dome where these places are, but you'll likely want to keep time constraints in mind. Unfortunately, it's not like Boston's Fenway Park or New York's Yankee Stadium where there are plenty of food possibilities immediately surrounding or within a block of the stadium here.
Very casual would be Lucy's Retired Surfer's Bar - Bar and Grill that is lively, booth eating - quesadillas, burgers, seafood, etc. 0.8 mile walk straight down Girod Street toward the river, which is the street between the Superdome and the arena. About 0.6 miles down Girod is Herbsaint - more upscale with tablecloths - dinner entrees $26-$32. On Poydras Street - also 0.6 mile walk - Japanese restaurant Horinoya.
There is a BBQ restaurant in the Entergy Building that is pretty decent and is about two blocks from the Arena. It is Arkansas based so not New Orleans. N.O. does not do BBQ, so this one is as good as BBQ gets in the area.
Walk a few more blocks and on Baronne on the Quarter side of Poydras is P G that has very good po-boys. It is very popular with the business crowd. I like the oyster po-boys the best. Be forewarned it's little bit of a cross between "cheeseburger, cheeseburger, Pepsi" of Saturday Night Live and Seinfeld's soup Nazi. There appears to be no system in place to take orders. Take that back, there is no system. There are really two lines, not one, so don't be upset if it looks like someone butted ahead. They just went to the other line that only regulars know about. All that being said, it is very good (stick to the po-boys) and quick. You'll be back in time to see the next game.
BDK. That is a great idea. We have friends that have never been to NOLA with us and they wanted to eat a good po-boy. That might be hitting two birds with one stone. Are cabs pretty prevalant on the streets or should we put the cab company numbers in our cell phones? cruise ship grand princess I have just never noticed before.
For places to get po-boys, I had good ones at Liuzza's by the Track (up near the racetrack and the art museum) and Johnny's (in the French Quarter, just don't look too hard at the dirty digs). Two places that get raves from Chowhounds that I didn't get to include the Parkway (again, not that far from the art museum) and the Parasol (in the Lower Garden District). None of these are close by the Superdome.
It looks like we will have no more than two hours between the rounds. Having cabs there will be a plus, that is good to know. Thanks cruise ship grand princess to everyone for their information. I can always count on fodorites to come through!
Just got back from NOLA. We ended up eating cruise ship grand princess at Dominica in the restored Roosevelt Hotel. It is John Besh's new restaurant. It is open from 11am to 11pm and it is not a fancy place during the day. The food was really good with small/large plates and ultrathin pizzas like in Rome. We made reservations because we were a party of nine but at that time you could easily get a table without one. The restaurant entrance is on Baronne between Canal and Poydras. I highly recommend it. P G right down the street but closed at 3pm so it was not doable for the time we needed. Lucy's was too far away to walk and get back. Thanks cruise ship grand princess for all the help guys!
