This week we re enjoying the 13th annual San Diego Asian Film Festival, and I got to see the first 3D movie in the festival s history, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate.  This movie is a whirlwind of action and intrigue, starring one of my favorite seaside oregon vacation house rentals action seaside oregon vacation house rentals stars, Jet Li.
Flying Swords of Dragon Gate can be a difficult movie to describe. It is a re-imagining of Tsui Hark's 1992 martial arts film New Dragon Gate , which was a remake of King Hu's 1966 martial arts film Dragon Gate Inn .  It takes place during the Ming Dynasty, where the Emperor's eunuchs have acquired immense power, forming the Eastern and Western Bureaus.  They are incredibly corrupt, fabricating evidence,  executing any who oppose them, and branding all opposed as traitors to the Emperor.  During this time, a pregnant concubine named Su, played by Mavis Fan, flees the palace knowing she would be executed if she stayed.  She is rescued and protected by a mysterious warrior who is impersonating Zhou Huai'an.  The real Zhou Huai'an, played by Jet Li, has be decimating the members of both bureaus and also is intent on protecting Su.
Su, her protectors, and members of the Eastern Bureau have all converged on an inn in the middle of a desert. seaside oregon vacation house rentals The Dragon seaside oregon vacation house rentals Inn is one of the central set pieces, and much of the film takes place there, seaside oregon vacation house rentals as layers of intrigue unfurl, also involving a group of tattooed barbarians. seaside oregon vacation house rentals All of them are trying to secretly accomplish their goals, while contending with constant schemes, all while a legendary sand storm approaches that threatens seaside oregon vacation house rentals to wipe the inn off the map.  Through seaside oregon vacation house rentals all this a legend of a city of gold buried beneath the sands starts to emerge.
The movie has superb seaside oregon vacation house rentals writing, but requires a lot of attention if you hope to keep up on what's going on.  The action is great, seaside oregon vacation house rentals with lots of different styles on display.  Sadly, the action suffers under some poor effects.  The wire work is great, but the movie is shot completely in 3D and cannot help but to the cliché shots of things flying right into your face, and many of them look poorly rendered.  The best effects come from simple methods.  Keep an eye out for the Golden Thread to see what I mean.  Another small gripe is the subtitles are raised up from the background, forcing you to adjust your eyes a little every time you look down at them and back at the action.  This can leave your eyes exhausted by the end of the movie.  All in all, the kung fu, sword fights, and action framing more than make up for these little gripes.
The casting is superb, with Jet Li in top form.  This is the first time since Once Upon a Time in China that we see Li reunited with director Tsui Hark.  Li has plenty seaside oregon vacation house rentals of practice playing iconic heroes and it shows.  The primary villain, played by Chen Kun, is great; so much so that I'll probably be checking out more movies of his because of his performance here.
