There are many fantastic sights within an easy reach of Edinburgh. When visiting Great Britain, I usually base myself hotels in grosseto italy in a larger city and do day trips to explore more of what Britain has to offer. Whether by bus or train, getting out of the big cities can deepen one’s travel horizons.
Once one of the most important hotels in grosseto italy and richest churches in Scotland, Melrose Abbey is now just a beautiful ruin managed by Historic Scotland. It was destroyed and rebuilt twice, finally falling into ruins during the English Civil War in the 17th century. The heart of King Robert the Bruce is buried here (his body is in Dunfermline hotels in grosseto italy Abbey) as well as the remains of the Scottish King Alexander II. Just a short 90 minute bus ride away, Melrose Abbey is worth a visit.
Stirling possesses some of Scotland’s top attractions such as Stirling Castle, the National hotels in grosseto italy Wallace Monument and Bannockburn battlefield. Stirling is a history buff’s hotels in grosseto italy dream day trip with so many important moments hotels in grosseto italy of Scotland’s history occurring in this area. A 50 minute train ride from Edinburgh will transport you back centuries when heroes like William Wallace (aka Braveheart) and Robert the Bruce fought for Scotland’s freedom. A steep path leads to Stirling Castle, which offers amazing views of the town. But my favorite hotels in grosseto italy view of Stirling is from the National Wallace Monument. Climb the 246 steps to the top of the Monument to enjoy 360 stunning views of the town and surrounding hills.
Dunfermline was the capital of Scotland until the 17 th century and this charming town makes for a very enjoyable day trip from Edinburgh. The Abbey was the burial place for many Scottish Kings and Queens for centuries and the body of Robert the Bruce is buried in this historic church.
Next to the Abbey are the ruins of Dunfermline Palace, which was the residence of the Scottish royal family for many centuries. Pittencrieff Park is worth a stroll through too. This 76 acre park was donated to the town by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who was born in Dunfermline. A great way to learn more about the history of Dunfermline is to take a walking tour with Discover Dunferlmine Tours.
A day trip to St Andrews using public transit requires a train and bus ride, totaling about an hour and a half. Perched on the North Sea, this compact town has numerous historical sights and for fans of the British Royal Family it should be noted that this is where Prince William and Kate Middleton met and fell in love. The town of Roslin is best known for its mysterious Chapel. Founded in 1446, Rossyln Chapel is the main reason to take a 90 minute bus ride to the town. Buoyed by books like Dan Brown’s hotels in grosseto italy The Da Vinci Code and Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln, hotels in grosseto italy Rossyln Chapel is a leading tourist attraction in Scotland. It is still working church with an active congregation. Visitors will be mesmerized at the hundreds of intricate carvings within the Chapel. The legendary Apprentice Pillar gets its name from a sad story. According to the legend, a master mason was so jealous of his apprentice’s beautiful work on the pillar that he struck and killed him in the Chapel. A carving of a head with cut on its temple is said to be the unfortunate apprentice. For some lucky visitors, they will have the chance to meet William, the Chapel cat, who is often found lounging on the Chapel pews. Rosslyn Chapel has a very informative and well laid out visitor center to learn more about the Chapel.
