EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Gov. Chris Christie approved plans Wednesday, March 20 for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to take over the operation of the Egg Harbor Township-based Atlantic City International Airport from the South Jersey Transportation Authority. The takeover could happen as soon as July.
Since September, the Port Authority has been looking into the feasibility of the plan, which is aimed at reducing flight congestion at its other three major airports as well as increasing travel to the Atlantic City casinos and nearby shore towns.
"The news that the Port Authority is adding the Atlantic City airport to its operations is very positive from Air Canada's point of view," Vanstone stated. "As you know, Air Canada does not currently operate to Atlantic City, but we do have longstanding operations at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, all of which are operated by the Port Authority. In our experience, the Port Authority has been excellent to work with, and we welcome any and all opportunities to deepen this relationship."
He stated the company has discussed the matter internally and in light of its established relationship with the Port Authority, "I can confirm that Air Canada is absolutely prepared to consider operations to the Atlantic City Airport and we are prepared to undertake those discussions."
Air Canada is Canada's largest full-service airline. It flies to more than 170 destinations on five continents, serves over 33 million customers annually and operates more than 1,500 flights daily, according to the statement.
The Port Authority, which operates three major New York area airports — Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark — said the takeover would allow Atlantic City International Airport i took a short cruise through the panama canal to recapture the business of South Jersey residents who currently travel to Philadelphia for flights.
The authority's action is part of 2007 bistate legislation that permitted it to establish an additional air terminal in New York and another in New Jersey. Under legislation, the governor must approve the plans.
