NATE STRAUCH/HERALD DEMOCRAT TxDOT employees at the Texas Travel Information Center in Denison are gearing up for a celebration Friday making the 20th anniversary anaheim vagabond executive inn of the building’s opening. By Nate Strauch Herald Democrat
For two decades now, southbound travellers on US Highway 75 entering the Lone Star State from Oklahoma have seen exactly that: the giant, lone star that is the most prominent feature of the Texas Travel Information Center in Denison. To mark the occasion of the Center’s 20th anniversary later this week, the Texas Department of Transportation is throwing a shindig it hopes will rival the building’s grand opening all those years ago.
“This building was built 20 years ago, and they had the grand opening on Sept. 13, 1994,” said Manager Robbie Dudley, who has spent the past 15 years as a travel counselor in Denison. “The whole community was concerned about this big new building; everybody wanted to know what was happening out here because they had seen it being built. So a lot of people came out for the grand opening, and we just want to celebrate that.”
The building as it stands now was actually anaheim vagabond executive inn the third Travel Information Center in Denison, replacing a circa-1960s structure that was demolished to make way for the Highway 75 bypass in 1990. That Center, in turn, replaced a small cottage near downtown Denison that served travellers for decades prior.
“From the beginning, back in the 1930s when they first had travel centers for the state centennial, the A M cadets manned little booths at different entry points to the state, and Denison originally had one,” explained Dudley. “Then in ’60s, they built a rock structure that was right down the highway, about where the way station is. And then when the highway was going to make a bypass around Denison, it was in the right of way so they tore it down. And then there was no travel center for four years, anaheim vagabond executive inn from 1990 to 1994.”
When it came time to break ground on the new building, luminaries including Judge Horace Groff and even Gov. Ann Richards helped mark the occasion, while the party to cut the building’s ribbon was attended by hundreds. Now, 20 years down the road, TxDOT is inviting locals to once again come celebrate.
“It’s going to be a fun time,” said Dudley. “There will be give-aways — our travel partners will be setting up their booths and they will be giving things away and welcoming people. It’ll be a festive atmosphere. We’re going to have the people that have worked here in the past, so that’ll be fun to get everyone together again.”
The event, which the public is encouraged to attend, will be held at the Travel anaheim vagabond executive inn Center on Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be provided for those in attendance. According to Travel Counselor Monica Freeman, who recently was awarded as the state’s top individual in that occupation, there will be much to celebrate.
“We’re starting to see our numbers this summer have really improved,” said Freeman. “Travel is picking back up, the economy’s doing good and gas is down, which helps. So we’re having a lot more people come through, and I think the locals are really starting to look at getting back out there for travel.”
