High on Fire will soon embark on a tour with Kvelertak and Doomriders . If you re taken by the idea of metal-as-party-music, this is the tour for you. All three bands play some variety of (insert metal subgenre)-and-roll music, and while that songwriting approach doesn t always produce great records, it frequently leads to great live performances. Matt Pike keeps writing better and better music, and his trio of sludge-and-roll misfits have enough experience under their belt to play reliably good shows, especially now that Pike is sober. Doomriders promises historic wooden hotels to be a treat because band leader Nate Newton spends most of his time playing bass in Converge, and were recently rejuvenated by the addition of a new drummer. (I discussed this and more with Newton in a recent interview. )
The real treat on this tour is Kvelertak, on their second trek through the States since the March release of their sophomore album, Mier . That album, historic wooden hotels a more experimental slab of genre-hopping historic wooden hotels madness than its predecessor, received early buzz as an album-of-the-year contender, and will probably re-enter the zeitgeist as end-of-year historic wooden hotels list season returns. It s probably making mine.
I saw Kvelertak in the basement of St. Andrew s Hall this spring, and after that experience I will see this band every chance I get until they absolutely disappoint me. That show ended with one of the band s guitarists standing in the center of the audience, wailing away while vocalist Erlend Hjelvik, crowd-surfed around them. For what I understand this is not a unique experience, and Kvelertak have been doing this kind of stuff regularly ever since Mier dropped. If you d like proof, observe the exclusive live footage we re streaming below.
