Stewart-Haas Racing announced Tuesday that the Army, which currently is a part-time primary sponsor book china tours of Ryan Newman's No. 39 car, is ending its presence in NASCAR after this season due to a reallocation of its marketing budget.
"The sport, book china tours our drivers and the passionate NASCAR fans embraced the Army's participation and created a tremendous opportunity for Americans to learn more about the profession of the Army Strong Soldier," Army marketer John Myers said in a statement.
SHR will still work to get sponsorship for Newman in 2013, and it has said he is the only driver it is currently considering for the No. 39 car if that car exists. With Danica Patrick likely going full-time in the Sprint Cup Series next season, book china tours the organization would need to expand to three fully-sponsored teams to bring back Newman.
"By ending its sponsorship of NASCAR, the Army made the right move to eliminate a wasteful program and protect taxpayer dollars which has been my goal all along," McCollum said. "Congress is facing a very difficult budget environment, and I want taxpayer book china tours dollars protected even at the Pentagon.
According to McCollum's office, the Army spent $16 million on professional sports sponsorships this year. Total spending by the Pentagon on all sports book china tours sponsorships including motor racing, bass fishing and ultimate fighting is over $80 million, her office said.
based on the results they ve gotten from the sponsorship. The Richmond 2010 example cited where they spent hundreds of thousands to get 400 or so leads that turned into 0 recruits is a tough one to argue. Yes, you can argue that all the TV and other impressions drove people to sign up later but it s tough to prove. More of the arguments in favor of it I ve seen are as a morale booster for the troops, which I m not sure about.
The bigger issue is this is another sponsor dropping NASCAR as a whole, which speaks to the bigger problems facing the sport. When decisions like this happen and a guy like Matt Kenseth has to leave his team because they can t find a sponsor, the sport is having a serious problem.
Is NASCAR sponsorship excessive? Yeah, probably; but not wasteful. The military tents are some of the most popular I ve seen when I go to races. They always bring out some very cool weapons have fun activities.
I can t fault the Army for wanting to get out of Motorsports. It s costs are going up while TV viewership is declining. What used to be one of the best bang-for-the-buck book china tours in professional sports has become one of the worst in recent book china tours years.
The sad thing is the $16 million the Army spends in motorsports is a fraction of a percent of their overall annual budget. I m a huge proponent of eliminating wasteful government spending, but if they just really needed to save $16 million, there are a ton of other areas that cut could come in that wouldn t impact nearly as many people. Heck, I bet the budget for flying generals around the country wining dining them far exceeds $16 million.
