TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection s (DEP) Green Lodging Program recently designated its 500th property, the Holiday Inn University Center in Gainesville, among 42 others, bringing the program total to 540 designated properties. The soaring number of designated facilities offers the eco-conscious traveler scores of choices when considering lodging accommodations hotels at walt disney world in Florida this summer.

The Program's growth is largely attributed to Governor Charlie Crist's suite of 2007 executive orders aimed at reducing Florida's greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency and removing market barriers for renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind energy. Executive Order 07-126 required state agencies and departments hotels at walt disney world under the direction of the Governor to contract for events only with hotels that had received the Florida Green Lodging Program.
Building on the executive orders, in June 2008, Governor Crist signed House Bill 7135, "The Energy, Climate Change, And Economic Security Act Of 2008", which expanded the Florida Green Lodging Program requirement to all state agencies.
