If you become interested in Coba, there is a San Francisco grocery at the Coba intersection in Tulum

We are experienced Coz travelers but haven't ever felt the need to visit the mainland until now. We are thinking about visiting Tulum and/or Isla Mujeres and are trying to figure out the best way to do this.
Our plan is take the ferry over to Playa Del Carmen then renting a car (four adults going) then driving dollar auto rental ourselves the rest of the way. So, is this a good way to go or is there something better? Can anyone recommend a good rental agency? (I really like Less Pay in CZM). Is there anything else I need to consider in doing this? I already know about insurance (One of the reasons I like Less Pay)
I have taken the tour bus and driven myself to Tulum as well as Chichen Itza (actually we took the plane tour over to C.I. and drove it once from Cancun, but who's splitting hairs ), and driven myself to Coba, doing it yourself is much better.
Yeah, we've driven to Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itzam, Ek Balam, all easy enough - and Holbox, not so hard if you can find a good map, which I couldn't then. Better ones are available now. Tulum is very simple, an hour away maybe - okay half day trip total. dollar auto rental Another hour inland from town there is Coba, much bigger deal. Do both in a day with good planning and preparation, but I won't go on about Coba needs and plans unless you're interested.
Great $10 map and guides, none of which you really need for Tulum, but otherwise maybe: Cancunmap.com-Your complete information source for Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, dollar auto rental Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya
Cheapest place for a decent car in PDC probly is Easyway: Easy Way Cancun Car Rental: your Cancun Airport Rental Car I like their insurance package. Just make sure they give you good directions to their office in case you miss each other at the ferry. It's maybe 5 blocks.
As you leave PDC headed south, there is a convenience store on the right just out of town. Good place to pick up bottled water if you're only doing Tulum. You'll need Mexican coins for the restroom; ask how much and where at the store.
If you become interested in Coba, there is a San Francisco grocery at the Coba intersection in Tulum where you can buy more water, ice, a cooler, etc. for a bigger dollar auto rental day. Coba is huge but rental bicycles are $3 each.
Eh, I edited that crack out, sorry. The problem was reported from a good source, but she backed out on posting all of the details. Defending a libel suit is too much regardless of how right you are, as we know all too well here on SB.
A couple years ago we took the ADO bus (not the tourbus) over to Tulum from PDC. I think it was $8 and only stops once or twice, one of them being at Xel Ha. Coming back they run about once an hour or so, so you can return when you are ready. They are air conditioned dollar auto rental and comfortable. As my friend Sharky said, it is pretty much a straight shot on a nice smooth highway regardless.
I would think public bus would work (we've used it, but not for a long time), but the nice thing about having a car is that you can do things like drive down the beach road and stop for refreshments and maybe a swim. And with four people, it's probably cheaper to have your own. I haven't dollar auto rental been over to Zazil Kin for a few years, but it used to be a good place to grab a drink and hang out at the beach, from which you can see the ruins (makes for a beautiful swim). There are tons of little restaurants right in the pueblo, too. If your main focus is seeing wonderful ruins, Coba's the better bet.
I'm sure there are any number of good ways/places to rent. We've tried a couple of different agencies, but I've forgotten most of them. Last time we wanted a car, we walked into Rentadora Isis on Cozumel, and she called the office on the mainland (run by a relative) and told them to expect us. The little red car we got was fine--clutch a little funky, but good AC and no problems.

$8 RT? I cannot get the translator to work on ADO - Compra de boletos -- Horarios so I am not sure at all, but it looks like 54 Pesos each way = $9 US RT I think . $36 for 4 would be cheaper than renting, a Nissan 4 door at Easyway would be $48 plus a little gas with maximum insurance - which costs more than the car as usual, dollar auto rental but...
It doesn't dollar auto rental look like it goes to the Archeological zone anymore, so that would be a problem as I like to save my walking for the ruins - and it's far enough from the parking lot thru the mall to the ruins for me.
And then if you want to make a day of it and do Coba too, going when the bus does to wherever the bus stops just wouldn't work between breakfast and supper with Coz ferries, and you'll really need extra water in the trunk, IMO.
You have got good advise on Tulum. If you are heading to Isla I would take the Ado bus to the Cancun bus station for $4 pp , takes about an hour. From there it is about $6 cab ride to the ferry. The ferry is about a 20 minute ride to the Island.
