London has been sweltering in the heat for much of July, and things have been hotting up in the capital’s boutique hotel scene too. As tourists continue to arrive in droves, it’s perhaps hardly surprising that the Mastercard Global Destinations Cities Index has recently predicted that London will be the most visited city in 2014. Shoreditch has become one of East London’s hippest locales in recent years, and in 2015 will gain another trendy boutique hotel. The Z Hotel Shoreditch will have 107 rooms within a former office building, and will be part of the wider Bower Quarter. The property will be the group’s fourth London hotel, with director Bev King recently commenting that, “we are thrilled to be moving east… Shoreditch is one of London’s coolest areas.”

There’s currently a trend towards smaller, more exclusive boutique hotels opening in London, and the latest such property is The Library on St Martin’s Lane. The Library is a literary-themed retreat and private members club, with just six rooms available. The hotel opened this month, and will be accompanied by a restaurant and a gym in late September.
Also in September, the Artist Residence will open in Pimlico, with just 10 rooms. The hotel is the latest boutique property from independent hoteliers Charlotte Newey and Justin Salisbury. Its restaurant, 64 degrees, is interesting in that it will not have waiters or waitresses, with the chefs themselves serving the customers and interacting with them.
K West Hotel Spa recently opened what is believed to be the world’s first e-cigar lounge . Guests at the hotel’s lounge can choose from a range of differently flavoured e-cigars, and accompanying cocktails are also available. Those who have a certain nostalgia for the days when smoking in pubs and clubs was permitted, will no doubt also enjoy the music taken from 2007, when the smoking ban was first introduced.
