Orange County lawmakers crafted a wish list Tuesday for the legislative session that starts March 8, but a top priority a $2 rental-car surcharge is likely to get a chilly reception from lawmakers, House Speaker Dean Cannon detroit park and fly hotels said.
Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs pushed to include the $2 levy among the county s laundry list of wants, which also includes priorities such as protecting state transportation funding, and opposing efforts to expand jail time inmates would spend in county facilities. Jacobs and Orange leaders want to use the potential $30 million to $35 million revenue stream that a rental-car surcharge detroit park and fly hotels could bring in to help fund road, rail or transit needs.
Orange is also expecting to play a lot of defense to stem efforts in Tallahassee to cut or transfer mental health and juvenile justice costs to local taxpayers, while monitoring attempts to curb growth rules and local impact fees. All these issues will get extra attention as Republicans push an anti-tax and anti-regulation agenda in Tallahassee.
