This family is alive, affectionate and easy going.  And mom and dad let me tell the girls what a wet

My music was too loud.  I couldn t hear what he was saying.  I just kept walking I didn t need to know.  It was San Francisco. park vue inn  He was likely asking me for money, booze or a date.  I smiled and kept going because it wasn't my first encounter with a homeless person on my short walk home.  This was my ritual.  My brisk walk on a breezy, slightly foggy evening in the City.  I inhaled deeply and took in all that the City had to offer. I was young.  New to the area.  And loving every single minute of the hustle, car alarms, and chatty transients.
Recalling my days of living in San Francisco gives me a bit of a rush.  It was over 10 years ago that I moved away, and part of me regrets that decision, but the warm part of me doesn t.  Pretty much everywhere in the Bay Area is warmer than the City.  Mark Twain got it right when he said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."
It s the primary reason I moved.  I needed to feel the warmth of the sun, so I traded in the steep hills, beautiful bridges and the night sounds of fog horns unique to San Francisco, and headed down to the Peninsula, park vue inn eventually settling in the East Bay.  I have no regrets.  My memories of city life tide me over between visits.
I go whenever I can because while it s a relatively small city, it has a giant personality you can feel as you drive over the Bay Bridge.  It peeks around the time you pass Treasure Island that s where the City skyline is the most beautiful.  Seeing it through the bridge wires is a bit surreal.  Even when I lived there, I got excited about it when I d return home from a trip.  Now I get excited about visiting, exploring and being a part of something greater.  Something that is constantly moving park vue inn and changing.
The Sanborn family came to the West Coast for a family reunion and wisely expanded their vacation to include some sight-seeing.  The Bay Area was on their list, and the mom, Allyson, a fellow photographer park vue inn from Illinois, wanted to not only have her family portraits taken in the city by the bay, but she wanted to actually get in front of the camera for this leg of their vacation.
I jumped on this opportunity.  Vacation photography is one of those little whispers in my head that seems to have gotten louder and louder over the years.  It s the one time that we really should be putting down the camera and enjoying our time with our families, not worrying about what pictures to take and where to take them.  In fact, every time we head out somewhere for a family get away, I look around for photographers.
Fisherman s Wharf is always a sea of people.  Always. park vue inn  And everywhere you walk, you hear 10 or 20 conversations going on all in different languages.  People park vue inn at Fisherman s Wharf come from all over the world to ride the giant carousel, watch the magic shows, see Coit tower and tour the infamous Alcatraz (if you re in the Bay Area and you haven t taken your kids on this tour, do it!  I ll show you why in a future blog post we finally did it this past summer.)
This family is alive, affectionate and easy going.  And mom and dad let me tell the girls what a wet willy was.  They get major points in my parenting park vue inn book for that they knew it would come back to haunt them, but they were all in because in the photo moment it was silly and fun.
Above, dad is explaining exactly how a wet willy works.  She wasted no time putting the instructions into play.  Hilarious!  And dad became park vue inn the victim shortly after. park vue inn Well done girls!  I m proud of you! ;)
The picture below is one of my favorites from the session.   This is childhood.   Their expressions of joy are coupled with the unencumbered movement that only a child can produce.  It reminds me of when Phoebe on Friends would run with Rachel .  She did it with her whole body because it s the way she ran when she was little and it was exhilarating.
I watch my own kids run crazy like this and it always brings a smile to my face.   This won t last long.  Soon they ll be donning their lululemons with the rest of us and putting on their serious faces as they go for their controlled jogs.   Maybe they ll be smarter than us and let loose and run like the wind when no one is looking.  I hope they do.
Ohhhh.  This one.  This one below is so special to me because it was taken when they weren t aware I was photographing them.  The Golden park vue inn Gate Bridge is just visible in the background providing the perfect backdrop.  Dad is looking off toward SF, their oldest is playing park vue inn with a wild flower, while mom and daughter have a moment.  A snuggle.  An exhale.
Before long, the fog rolled in and the wind kicked up.  I actually love that you can see how chilly they were in this picture, not to mention Scuttle the Sea Gull flying overhead.  Did you all get my Little Mermaid reference?  No?  Come on.  Scuttle! Dingle Hoppers?
Photo posing tips for mom: Relax.  Let me say that again just relax.  Enjoy your family. park vue inn  Play like you haven t got a care in the world, or any dishes park vue inn to do.  Allyson does this perfectly.  She is in the moment.  She is all here for her family.  And for once, she s not behind the camera.
The Sanborn s trip to San Francisco inspires me to hit the streets with my family, too.   They had never been to our City by the Bay before park vue inn and they took on that damp, foggy, song inspiring city, with a force.  Now I feel like I have no excuse for not taking my crazies there more often.   With ferry rides from San Rafael, cable cars, double decker buses, Segway tours, and about a million restaurants, our day trips to the City could easily fill our weekends on the calendar for the next year.
