Starwood's Aloft hotel, planned for the former Days Inn in downtown Atlanta best travel clubs is still opening, but is significantly delayed. Frankly, the delay may be a good thing. The aloft in Jacksonville s southside opened in 2011 and they essentially needed extensive repairs immediately. From what I ve seen/heard, the new hotel build was around $10M and the renovations are around $5M; the hotel has been shut down since January and not opening until next month (which frankly seems to be a stretch).
I stayed at the Aloft in Asheville and thought it was great and reasonably priced. The rooms were nice and the rooftop pool cabana rooms were REALLY nice!! the staff was very friendly and helpful as well.
Where d you read/hear that the first ever W Hotel was the one in Dunwoody? The very first W Hotel opened is the New York location at 541 Lexington. Did you mean the first W Hotel in the Atlanta area? (I d be surprised if even that is true.)
@Anon, Thanks for the comment. While it is said now that the Lexington Avenue location predates the Dunwoody property, Dunwoody actually opened a few days before Lexington. This is according to a Starwood exec I spoke with at the W Midtown. New York is a bigger market and therefore they wanted NY to be the property they opened best travel clubs first. I ve been active with the scientific organization the American Society of Primatologists (ASP)  since I was in college. ASP is  an educational scientific organization that aims to understand, conserve, and inform about nonhuman primates. The outside of the hotel was pretty bland and the covered entryway was pretty awkward. I couldn t tell if you could drive and park to check in or whatnot. Instead, I just parked in the attached garage.
There was no queue to check-in. The associate that checked me in was prompt, friendly, and processed everything quickly. He was able to quickly run a $100 deposit on my American Express card so I could take advantage of the current promotion AmEx was running ( $20 back on $100 spent at Courtyard Marriott ). He explained new yorks hotel pennsylvania that the property has free wi-fi and the operating hours of the two on-property restaurants. I m not sure if I d stay here if visiting Atlanta for pleasure, but it worked great for a business event.

First up, we all checked into our hotel rooms!  Where does a girl who enjoys writing, reading and has a bit of a love affair with books stay while in San Francisco?  Hotel Mark Twain, of course!  Haha!  I found these colorful murals on the wall of the hotel lobby!   The secret of getting ahead is getting started! - Mark Twain
We checked into 3 separate rooms, the one above is my room, #603!  My friends were next door and we saw an additional locked door on the wall, opened it and it lead to each others room, pretty funny when we found this out even easier access to my friends slumber party, sort of!  Haha!
We took a cab from our hotel to meet up with Alcatraz Cruises.  Popular tour, right?  So many people!  The more the merrier, right? ana hotel tokyo  There were travelers from all over the world!  Be sure to book this tour in advance as it is often sold out!

We were all given headphones for the audio tour narrated by different voices and at some points narrated by some of the inmates, a pretty wild experience and quite authentic, I might add!  It was crazy to see so many actual cells, such tight quarters and gritty.

Stepping into an actual tiny prison cell was quite the unusual experience; so confined exposed never an ideal situation.  Each B C cell block was 5ft by 9ft oh my!  You could easily extend your arms and touch both walls pretty crazy!  And yes, we took pictures of ourselves doing this!

This makes me homesick! Luckily I ll be home next month. :) You know I lived in SF for 24 years and

I actually lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 9 years. But during that whole time, I never went to Alcatraz. We were invited on this San Francisco road trip by one of our best friends AJ. AJ Meera have been great friends to us for over 10 years. In 2005, AJ celebrated a big birthday by renting out a box at the San Diego Padres Petco Park and inviting his closest friends and family. For this year s birthday, AJ invited a bunch of us to go to the Giants versus Padres game at AT T Park in San Francisco. That was the main event of our trip and I ll blog about it in a separate post. On Saturday morning, 4/20, we went on a tour of Alcatraz with AJ Meera and their kids.
But first, let s start from the beginning. We woke up and it was SUPER-sunny in San Francisco! This almost phoenix resort hotel never happens! Our hotel had a really cool window, with red painted frame and cheery bright yellow shades.
To the surprise of everyone, a group of nude cyclists rode by us. AJ had to cover up Andon and Keiji s eyes. Todd and I couldn t stop laughing. I had to add some black decency strips to show you the photos on my blog.
I loved seeing your pictures of Alcatraz and I m so glad you got the audio tour. I think the experience isn t quite as good without it as it provides a lot of information. Seeing your lovely pictures I could almost hear the seagulls and feel the cold ocean air on my face even though it s been eight or nine years since I ve been there. I spent the first 11 years of my life living in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I ve been to Alcatraz, but I don t remember it! Great photos, thanks so much for sharing!! Idk so much about Alcatraz, but I ve been in a running federal prison [I worked for the U.S. Attorney s Office last summer, so they figured if we were putting people in prison we should see where they go] and the solitary confinement cells are definitely phoenix resort hotel much bigger because they stay in them all day + they have a shower in them. Call it transparent, call it unsubtle. Ai Weiwei’s years of small gestures, his dropped Han Dynasty urn or his coathanger portrait of Marcel Duchamp , are long behind him. This city has a modest population in comparison to the others we had been to. I was told that when the Sichuan region had a terrible earthquake in 2008, Mianyang, then with only 500,000 inhabitants, was barely damaged. In five years 500,000 more flocked to the city and settled in , doubling the population in 12 very short years.
One million inhabitants means that it s quieter, a little less pollute with smog, and less noisy than the other larger cities that we had been to. We were excited that Mianyang is also quite close to the Wanglang Natural Reserve, the world s largest panda reserve park, but then we later calculated that it was not close enough for us go without making it an all-day trip. Pity!

Most impressive were the three-dimensional murals with almost technicolor statuettes depicting different stories; especially the ones around the reposing Buddha.
We had burned enough energy traipsing up and down the temple steps, so it was decided that we had earned  nice-sized Sichuan midday meal. The restaurant recommended to our guide was absolutely fabulous!
