Over the last two years, a new exciting restaurant has been quietly in the making near 9th and Hill St, a corner in Downtown LA s Historic Core that has been largely cottage inn pizza untouched even through the last decade of downtown urban revitalization. That s all about to change, however. The new restaurant at 9th/Hill, cottage inn pizza called Stocking Frame, will be opening soon, giving this block near the Fashion District a much needed jolt in the arm. (The new CrossFit 213 gym recently opened up at 9th/Hill as well.)
The lease was signed in the summer of 2010 for the ground floor space of a historic 1917 brick building that once housed a textile manufacturing company, according to the co-owner of Stocking Frame, Jerry Aschoff, who once managed Habana at The Lab in Orange County and then opened the highly cottage inn pizza popular cottage inn pizza Lola Gaspar in edgy Downtown Santa Ana, which he still owns today.
That s how we came up with the name Stocking Frame, Aschoff tells me. The historic building we re in was used for textiles and manufacturing. It s nice to see stuff starting to open here. It sounds like they are banking on the Ace Hotel. I live downtown and walk everywhere, but man it gets creepy down that way at night. All parking lots and no people if you re coming from the north. Walking down Hill or Olive, it just feels like a wasteland.

I grabbed lunch today at the new Juicy Lucy gourmet burger spot located inside the still brand new upscale food court at FIGat7th called TASTE. I could not believe how busy the lunch crowd was here around 1PM. Mind you, there are only 5 eateries that have opened up so far George s Greek Grill, The Melt, Juicy Lucy, Indus, and Oleego and there are already this many people coming to eat here for lunch? That shows you the amount of demand in the area and why I want more companies to move back into Downtown LA to boost our local economy. I can only imagine what the place will be like once all the other planned restaurants open, which include for now, Mendocino Farms, Flying Pig, The Pizza Studio, and Sprinkles Cupcakes with more restaurants to be announced soon in the next few months. That synergy will likely translate into a much stronger dinner crowd as well, especially when the other planned retailers microtel inns and suites open.
The current goal is to lease up the remaining spaces left at FIGat7th by this summer with most of the new stores open by the end of the year. I am told that the interest is very strong in FIGat7th and a lot of exciting new-to-Downtown LA retailers will be setting up shop that will help launch a new wave of retail development in Downtown LA, especially with Macy s Plaza nearby expected microtel inns and suites to get its own desperately needed remodel in the not-so-distant future. Eventually, with a mix of high quality retailers and restaurants, FIGat7th will become a regional draw and destination that will benefit the entire Downtown LA-area.

I m happy to see the food court prospering, but .I am new to LA, and I continue to be puzzled by just how much activity is located BELOW street level. The openness of the TASTE food court (outdoor seating, big glass walls) is an improvement on all the hidden malls beneath hotels, but I still wonder why they didn t just build the food court a street level and the Target above. For downtown to really prosper, we need the streets to be visible and buzzing. microtel inns and suites For all that, I m glad to see the crowds!
I do somewhat agree with you. This location, other than the large pylon signs on Figueroa, is setback from the street. I m not surprised at all with the density of folks in these few eateries that just opened. With the day-time density much higher than the night-time density, daylight business will always be busy with all the workers from the employment centers located all over downtown. With so much future potential for further density, I think the developers should microtel inns and suites have built a larger structure that can accomodate more businesses and even residential units.
FIGat7th is the culmination of a renovation of an existing retail center. Due to the poor original design, there wasn t much of a choice on the base design of the renovated center. However, the visibility and street level access is exponentially better now, and the true measure of the renovation won t be realized until the retail portion opens up top; not just the food court below.
I ve tried all of them. My favorite was The Melt. The grilled microtel inns and suites cheese was perfect (as it should) and The soups there were excellent. Oleego was only okay for me. I got the shrimp and wasnt too impressed. They tasted frozen, or maybe just not fresh. I need to go back and try something else before I give it my final opinion. Juicy Lucy was very good and I would definately eat there again. my favorite burger is still from The Oaks Gourmet though. I thought that Indus was dead on. One of the best Indian meals I ve had in a long while.
Do keep in mind that this was an adaptation of an existing structure not saying they would have done otherwise were it new construction, microtel inns and suites but they were limited to the structure already there in this case.
This has really been a great addition to DTLA. The Melt is awesome and I just had lunch at Indus which was really really good. My concern is that your conclusion that it ll translate into a dinner crowd seems unlikely. You should go back at night, it s very quiet. I m worried that the restaurants won t stay open at night and this will end up being a 9-5 place again. It is a really cool lunch spot indeed. You are spot on about the restaurants not staying open at night. It s only a matter microtel inns and suites of time before they shorten their (already short) hours. The place is DEAD besides lunch hour. There are several factors that prevent residents microtel inns and suites from hanging around Taste. The biggest thing thats upset me are the prices. Me and my girlfriend ate at Juicy Lucy and paid over $30 for 2 burgers and 2 fries. No drinks. Ridiculous.

It s feast or famine here. Trying to get lunch here was a disaster, it was so crowded with office drones. But going back at night it was fairly dead. I ve also been worried about them shortening the hours but let s see how it goes. I really like the concept and the food that I ve had so far, but I m not sure about the design. The space feels too budget for the restaurants (and prices) involved. I m not sure downtown residents (myself included) want to feel like they re at the mall food court just because they don t want to break the bank for a quick dinner. There s a disconnect between the quality of the food and the atmosphere of the space here. This isn t panda express, but it feels like it. I wish the eating area had different kinds of spaces some booths, microtel inns and suites some open. Right now it feels a little like a cafeteria, and not in a Clifton s kind of way.
I think it s too early to say that TASTE will not attract a dinner crowd. It s understandable that it s not right now given that 90% of the retailers planned microtel inns and suites for Fig@7th haven t even opened microtel inns and suites yet not to mention the Flagship style restaurants slated to join the food court on the bottom level.
At this stage Target is the central focus of the center as it s really the only major piece of it open. When everything else comes online there may be a more regular sustained crowd that provides a more regular stream of diners to the food court and restaurants.
I think Brookfield did a pretty good job with the renovation considering it s limitations. At street level you can now see all levels and easily access them, which is a huge improvement over the previous version of the mall. Looking forward to seeing the other retailers and restaurants open their doors.

A friend and I are traveling to Ireland (first time) with our kids (13, 12, 11), starting in Dublin. We planned on four days in Dublin, and hoping to include Trinity College, Grafton Street, Dublinia, National Museum of Ireland, Kilmainham Gaol, and the Guinness Storehouse. Is this doable in 3 days? We'd also like to do bus tours to Newgrange and Glendalough. Not sure if we can get this in time-wise, as we booked 3 nights hotel in the Temple Bar area.
We were planning on renting a car and driving tour of the white house to Kilkenny; we'd like to see Cashel, Cahir and Tipperary in this area. How many nights would this area take? Any suggestions as to B B's? Then drive to Blarney/Cork/Kinsale...again, days here and places to stay? Off to Killarney for a day or two. We then would drive up to Limerick, Bunratty Castle/folk park, Kinvarra, Ailwee Caves and Cliffs of Moher, with castles along the way. We're flying out of Shannon, so we'd drop off the car there. We are in Ireland for a total of 12 days (14 minus flight days).

Temple bar are is very noisy at night, as that's where folks go to drink and party. Other than that, it's fine. I recommend the Hop On Hop Off bus in Dublin itself - a great way to get around to all your various sites in the city.

The Loews Chicago Hotel will feature 400 guestrooms, including 36 suites, a signature restaurant, more than 25,000 square feet of meeting space, multiple outdoor terraces for guest and function uses, spa/fitness center and an outdoor rooftop including a pool overlooking under age rental car the city. ORLANDO (June 8, 2011) Rosen Hotels Resorts has partnered with the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Foundation to provide three four-year scholarships to deserving students who have been accepted into the 2011/2012 school year at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida. To achieve Silver Medallion, you must fly 25,000 miles and spend at least $2,500 celebrity cruise ships on Delta. If both are not met, you will not earn status. For Gold Medallion, you must spend at least $5,000; for Platinum, at least $7,500; and for Diamond, you must spend at least $12,500.
MQDs are based on money spent on Delta-marketed  flights only (taxes and fees excluded)—this does NOT include money spent on ancillary fees for bags, upgrades, in-flight food/bev, etc. Spending on Delta-marketed flights will include partner and code share flights those tickets with an 006 prefix. So, for example, dollars spent on a Delta-marketed Alaska Airlines flight will count. Delta says that passengers will be able to track their MQDs on the new SkyMiles dashboard introduced as part of its recent website redesign.
One way around the new rules: Spending at least $25,000 miles in a calendar year on any Delta SkyMiles American Express card exempts you from the spending thresholds (but not the mileage/segment requirements).
Meeting or beating these new spending thresholds may be easy for some, but for others, not so much. For example, to attain or maintain Gold status (50K miles + $5K spend), you would have to buy an average of ten $500 Delta tickets over the course of a year. Delta is betting that this will weed out the flyers that game the system for status or simply buy the lowest fares. Luckily, all other economy fares earn 100% MQMs. If you are privileged to purchase first or business class tickets, you will soon earn 200% MQMs. Reinforcing the revenue-based trend, Delta's incentive is to reward the flyers that bring Delta the most money, which makes sense. But, it is tough price to pay for of those who have learned to love the older, celebrity cruise ships easier way.
COMPETITIVE RESPONSE? While low fare carriers such as AirTran, Southwest, JetBlue and Virgin America have embraced the revenue-based trend, it is yet to be seen if American, United, or US Airways will follow along. Since most other legacy carriers are in varying states of uncertainty or disarray compared to Delta, it's unlikely they will enact such changes in the near future. However, if you are ready to bail on Delta, United will be happy to match your Delta status —but you must act fast. This offer expires on Jan 31. The deal requires you to fly United for a pre-determined number of miles within 90 days. Your new United status will be instant allowing you to enjoy upgrades and other perks during your qualification flights.
You tipped us off that this was coming. As others have said, it probably won t be too tough for most of the higher level elites to meet the spending level. And, especially if you have the AMEX Platinum SkyMiles celebrity cruise ships Business card, you should be able to knock off the $25k easily (and pick up 10k MQMs in the process). Of the many articles I ve written about the Fantasy so far, just one botched dinner stands out as the negative amidst and ocean of positive. But today I write about the worst experience I had on the Disney Fantasy, as a precautionary (and rather painful) tale with the hope that it doesn t happen to anyone else.

I m honestly not sure what good a deep tissue massage is, as my muscles feel no better and it certainly wasn t relaxing, but I ve been told that it was supposed to clear toxins from my body. Perhaps I didn t have many toxins to begin with.
The Senses Spa staff was surprised to hear that we didn t enjoy our massages and worked to correct the issue in the best way they could. They gave us the $242 price we thought we were getting and I received a call from the spa manager a few minutes later inviting both of us to return for the rest of the day to enjoy their Rainforest experience, a $32 value. (More on that below.)
I m still not happy about paying hundreds of dollars in exchange for nearly an hour of pain and a week s worth of sore muscles, but at least I learned a few lessons from the experience that I now pass on to you, correcting each of the mistakes listed above.
Solution to Mistake #1: Be informed. Ask questions. If you re booking a massage or any other treatment in the Senses Spa, make sure you know what you re paying for and how much it will be up front, to avoid surprises later. Don t feel intimidated if you don t know the difference between a Swedish massage and Elemis Aroma Stone Therapy. I certainly didn t and I paid the price for it.

Solution to Mistake #2: Stop your massage if you re not enjoying it. Neither Michelle nor I spoke up during the massage as we winced in pain, assuming it would either get better or that all the pain would somehow be worth it in the end. It wasn t. If your masseuse asks to be told if the pressure is too much, make sure to say something. I should have. And don t assume the treatment will get better. In fact, it will likely get worse.
