Do NOT use Dollar/Thrifty - the name is well known, but so is the reputation of the franchise on the

I have read bad reviews from Thrifty , so have looked into Europcar, for example, which is an established company. Does anyone have any suggestions, on whether to rent from those big companies, or smaller local companies? I am really afraid of scams like those of Thrifty, etc
There are perfectly reliable smaller local car rental operations on the island, but you should probably only use one of these if you have friends with good personal experience with a particular company.

We rented in 2011 from Don Nicholas, a local man who has a wonderful reputation for being helpful. The email is donnicholas@hotmal.com. He met us on arrival at the airport with a sign with our name and drove us to our apt that we rented in Grand Case-Dove's Nest, where our car was waiting. As he drove, he showed us the local super market and hints about driving on the island. He was GREAT! We rented a Getz for the 2 of us for $200/week. His company is GCL Car Rental.
