Here’s the latest installment of Noob Q A. Most readers email me their questions at geoff @ noobtraveler.com, but don’t hesitate to reach out via facebook or twitter if you ever want something answered.
First of all, if you re not a member timber cruising of Alaska timber cruising s Mileage Plan loyalty program, you can sign up here.  No worries, it s free. Alaska isn t in an alliance, but it does have partner airlines that you can redeem your Alaska Air miles with.
One of the perks of the Alaska Airlines award program is that you can book one-way awards (Delta Korean Air price one-ways as a round-trip), and even have a stop-over on a domestic ticket timber cruising each way if you re flying solely on Alaska metal. What, what. You can also add a stop-over each way if you re booking an international award ticket.
I ve found the Alaska website to be easy to use for booking awards, and it does a great job of showing partner availability. If you re unable to book an award online (for instance, you can t book Cathay Pacific online), you can request your Partner Award reservation on Cathay Pacific by calling Alaska Airlines Reservations at 1-800-252-7522 (TTY: Dial 711 for Relay Services) 5:00 a.m. Midnight (PT), daily.
Not bad. Alaska also has a Money Miles option, where you can use miles and cash for a ticket. For this flight, the Money Miles price would ve been 10,000 miles and $86. It s not always a great deal, but just another option. You can see the Money Miles chart here.
Just use the multi city option when searching for your awards, and plug in your segments and dates. As you can see, for this example, I added a stop-over in Seattle on my way to Anchorage and on the way back. The total price was only 25,000 miles and $11.20. Can t beat that.
It s only 50,000 Alaska miles for a one-way award in Cathay Pacific s business class to Hong Kong. Fantastic. Plus, you can add a stop-over. We recently flew in Cathay timber cruising Pacific s First Class , but wouldn t hesitate to fly their business, class which is an outstanding product.
The biggest aspirational award to use your Alaska miles on is Emirates First Class on the A380. There s a shower in the First Class cabin and a lot of other fancy stuff. Someday I ll test these waters, but haven t yet.
It s worth noting that Alaska agents are currently having trouble booking Emirates awards timber cruising past March 15, 2015, but they are working on a solution (hopefully). A couple of options are: 1. You can ask for them to search the old system for you. 2. You can call a few times until you get an agent willing to do a manual sell of the award space. There s no guarantee that will happen, but it never hurts to try.
You can of course earn Alaska miles by flying revenue flights on Alaska or a partner with a code share. But the easiest way is to apply for the personal and business Alaska Airlines cards issued by Bank of America. And they can be applied for multiple times. I ve actually applied timber cruising for them more than once in the same year, but ymmv. Of course, your credit score will need to be in good condition for you to get approved.
As you can see, there s a lot of value in the Alaska Air Mileage Plan loyalty program. I love the stop-over timber cruising rules, and the flexibility to use my miles for international or domestic travel. It s a great program to help diversify your miles, after earning transferrable points like Ultimate Rewards, Membership Rewards, and SPG points.

I ve been looking forward to totally impressing my wife with a first class trip on Emirates with all the bells and whistles. The car service in particular really did it for me. Then availability became locked out. Then car transfers became removed without notice. I guess first class lounge access timber cruising is next. It s really timber cruising a shame.
I have managed to earn over 1 MILLION reward points and miles every year. Traveling timber cruising 1st class for pennies is truly within reach for anyone. I write my blog so my readers can learn how they can start traveling classy for pennies.
