Saturday at the chapel of Moores Funeral Home with Dr. Harold Lawrence and Dr. Jay Hodges officiating. Burial will follow at Baldwin Memorial Gardens. -Mr. Petty was a native of Murray County but had made his home in Milledgeville since 1960. He graduated from Lincoln Memorial University, with graduate studies at the University of Georgia. He served as a principal at elementary and high school levels in Murray County, while maintaining a farm in Spring Place, GA. In 1954, he accepted a position with the Georgia Dept. of Education with Vocational Rehabilitation and relocated to Augusta. In 1960, he assumed responsibility as Director, in writing and implementing the Vocational Rehabilitation Program at The Yarborough Center at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville. In 1973, he retired at Lake Sinclair in Milledgeville. In 1992, he was elected to the Educator's Hall of Fame at Lincoln Memorial University. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma J. (Cox) Petty. Notes for OPAL RUBY PETTY: After all of her siblings were grown, married, and on their own Opal took care of her mother and at times her mother's handicapped brother Walt Ridley. They lived in various places in Georgia over about a twenty year period: Varnell, Cohutta, Rossville (just outside of Chattanooga), drury inn san antonio Kennesaw, and several places in Marietta. All near bus lines, since Opal did not own a car and had a family to support. Her last job, which she had many years was at Stephens Printing Company in Atlanta. She had a stroke about 1965 and had to retire. She still keeps in touch with her ex-co-employees and ex employer. Every time I have talked to her she was always jolly and witty. He had two memorable experiences in the guard: (1) He was guarding Calloway Mills against strikers - he was one of the guards guarding the residence of the Calloway Family. A man tried to break into their house. Ed and the man begin to scuffle and they fell off the porch. drury inn san antonio Ed fell on top of him and it killed the man. He had to appear in front of Governor Eugene Talmadge for him to officially pardon him for the murder. And (2) another time he was guarding the Governor's Mansion in Atlanta. He had orders not to let anyone in unless they had proof of business or an official pass. Eugene's son Herman Talmadge strolled up to enter and Ed refused to let him enter. After that they replaced him with someone who "could recognize the family". He became a patrolman for the City of Marietta, and worked his way up to be the Chief of the Marietta Police (1949-1952). For a year or so he was a guard at Lockheed. Then he was the Chief of the Cobb County drury inn san antonio Police. Because of politics he left the county force and worked various jobs as a guard or law enforcer, which included the Kennesaw Police and a deputy of the Cobb County Sheriff's Department.
